  80.               Beneath the impossibly fast salvos of notes and
  81.               dramatic whammy bar heroics, guitarist and
  82.               composer Steve Vai retains an immense
  83.               understanding of music. The man wrote his first
  84.               orchestral arrangements while still in his teens.
  85.               However, Vai's grasp on the inner workings of
  86.               music has never really translated into records for
  87.               average music fans t0 enjoy: He makes music for
  88.               musicians, and he's quite proud of that fact, even
  89.               going so far as to find a record label dedicated
  90.               solely to providing a place for those artists with
  91.               similarly athletic styles to call home.
  92.      
  93.               Vai's latest release, The Story of Light, is the
  94.               second part of a planned trilogy that began with
  95.               2005's Real Illusions: Reflections. Though the
  96.               trio of albums are intended to eventually be
  97.               arranged as something of a singular concept piece,
  98.               there is no chronological organization or specific
  99.               plot to speak of between the first two albums — at
  100.               least not one that can be sorted by listening
  101.               alone — though Vai has explained it as being "the
  102.               cosmic journey of a man driven mad by grief,
  103.               intertwining tragedy, revelation, enlightenment,
  104.               and redemption."
  105.      
  106.               The Story of Light has little in the way of
  107.               vocals, though when voices other than Vai's guitar
  108.               do appear, they are certainly substantial. The
  109.               lead single for the album - a cover of Blind
  110.               Willie Johnson's "John the Revelator" - features
  111.               The Voice finalist Beverly McClellan belting her
  112.               way through the gospel number, which has been
  113.               given the proper Vai treatment. The final result
  114.               is an exciting mix of chunky and warped guitar
  115.               rhythms holding down the fort as Vai's
  116.               unbelievably deft lead guitar twists in and out of
  117.               McClellan's call and response with a full choir.
  118.               The song links up immediately with "Book of the
  119.               Seven Seals", a track that contrasts the bombast
  120.               of "Revelator" with a hokey-sounding choir and an
  121.               awkward vibe that would be at home as the
  122.               soundtrack to the bonus round of your average B-
  123.               list Sega Genesis game. Though the two were
  124.               obviously intended to juxtapose one another, "Book
  125.               of the Seven Seals" has a cheesiness that earns it
  126.               the distinction of being the weakest track on the
  127.               album.

  129.               "Creamsicle Sunset" shows Vai's guitar playing in
  130.               rather uncharted territory for the axe-man,
  131.               floating through lush, clean tones that recall the
  132.               great lullaby-esque ballads of the Hawaiian-
  133.               influenced guitarists of the 1950s, and rounded
  134.               out by Vai using a playing technique that produces
  135.               a pinched sound, similar to traditional Eastern
  136.               stringed instruments. This is just one of
  137.               countless reminders why Vai is one of the most
  138.               revered guitarists on the planet: His progressing
  139.               ability to coax different sounds from his guitars.
  140.               Later in the album, Vai similarly exhibits his
  141.               uncanny musicality on the track "Mullach A'tSi",
  142.               which is possibly the most dynamic number of the
  143.               entire album, and features Vai paying homage to
  144.               the vocal-style of guitar work that Jeff Beck
  145.               pioneered, over a subtle-but-crucial harp part.
  146.               Yes, harp.

  148.               Fans of Vai's high-energy rock playing will not be
  149.               left wanting with this album. The track "Velorum"
  150.               has a prog-meets-Hendrix vibe and is significant
  151.               for its monstrous display of guitar chops.
  152.               However, "Gravity Storm" is the shred coup-de-
  153.               grace, a hectic romp through all of the man's
  154.               signature tricks and licks over a heavy groove.
  155.               The track's title is also the name of his new
  156.               signature guitar pickups, which hints at Vai's own
  157.               fondness for the song.

  159.               The Story of Light is business as usual for Vai, a
  160.               man who fights to avoid repeating himself and
  161.               always tries to find new territory on an
  162.               instrument that he has described as being
  163.               "infinite" in its creative potential.
